Diesel has broken €2 per liter. Fuel prices in Cyprus continue to rise.

The price of diesel fuel at the most expensive station in Cyprus has reached €2.076 per liter. This clearly exceeds the psychological threshold of €2. The average price of diesel fuel currently stands at €1.974, and experts warn that it could rise to €2.10–2.20 in the coming months.

Fuel prices in Cyprus are among the fastest-rising in the European Union. In August, diesel prices rose by 11.3% over the month, while gasoline prices rose by 6.2%. By comparison, across the EU, the increases were 8.3% and 3.3%, respectively. In Poland, fuel prices were 24% higher in August than a year earlier.

The latest data from the Cyprus Retail Fuel Price Observatory shows significant variations between individual stations, particularly for diesel fuel.

For a 50-liter diesel tank, choosing a station can mean a difference of more than €10. Drivers shouldn't assume that the price displayed on one road also applies in other parts of the city or district.

The most expensive diesel costs 2,076 euros

Just because you're over €2 doesn't mean you have to pay that much at all stations. The national average remains slightly lower at €1,974.

However, the barrier was exceeded significantly, not symbolically. The highest recorded price was €2,076, which is 10.2 cents more than the average and a whopping 20.7 cents more than at the cheapest station.

For a driver filling up with 50 liters, the difference between the lowest and highest prices translates to an additional cost of €10.35. For delivery vans, taxis, and vehicles traveling long distances daily, the difference quickly grows to much larger amounts.

Diesel prices in Cyprus rose by 11.3% in a month

Eurostat data confirms that this isn't just a matter of a few exceptionally expensive stations. In August, the price of diesel in Cyprus increased by 11.3% compared to July. Petrol prices rose by 6.2% during the same period.

Across the European Union, diesel prices rose by an average of 8.3%, and gasoline by 3.3%. Cyprus is therefore above the EU average in both categories.

In the case of gasoline, larger monthly increases were recorded only in Spain – by 8.2 per cent, Romania – by 6.6 per cent and Italy – by 6.3 per cent.

Year-on-year, fuels and lubricants used in private transport were 19.1 percent more expensive in Cyprus. The EU average was even higher at 23.8 percent.

Poland above the European Union average

In Poland, fuel prices in August 2026 were 24% higher than a year earlier. This was slightly higher than the EU average of 23.8% and significantly higher than the increase recorded in Cyprus.

Polish drivers felt the price increases particularly acutely in July. At that time, the price of gasoline rose by 17.2% and diesel by 13.4% over the course of a month. These were the largest monthly increases in the entire European Union.

However, this comparison doesn't mean that a liter of fuel necessarily costs more in Poland than in Cyprus. Eurostat measures price dynamics, meaning the rate of price increases, not just the amount displayed at the pump. Taxes, exchange rates, margins, and national protective measures also influence the final price.

Expert warns against the price of 2.20 euros

Energy expert Charalambos Ellinas estimates that the price of diesel fuel in Cyprus could exceed €2.10 to €2.20 per liter within the next month or two. He believes high prices for petroleum products could persist until mid-2027.

The current problem isn't just the price of crude oil. Despite Brent crude prices falling below $100 per barrel, the supply of finished diesel and jet fuel remains limited.

Some Russian refineries are idle following drone attacks. At the same time, exports of petroleum products from the Persian Gulf region have reportedly fallen by more than half. The limited availability of finished fuels is driving up prices, regardless of momentary fluctuations in crude oil prices.

Ellinas believes that the current excise tax reduction in Cyprus should be maintained next year. Parliament extended the current reduction until November 30, 2026, preventing an additional increase of approximately seven cents per liter.

The increases may be transferred to product prices

Expensive diesel fuel affects not only car owners. Higher costs are borne by transport companies, suppliers, farmers, and businesses transporting products between ports, warehouses, and stores.

Some of these costs may be passed on to food, services, and shipping. Rising aviation fuel prices, on the other hand, could increase pressure on airlines and, in the long run, on ticket prices.

Current data shows that warnings about diesel fuel costing over €2 are no longer a given. At the most expensive stations, this limit has been exceeded, and the difference between individual outlets has become so large that comparing prices before filling up can yield significant savings.
