Increased traffic on the roads. Police are increasing checks ahead of August 15th.

Police have stepped up road presence ahead of the August 15 holiday. More patrols will be deployed on highways, intercity roads, and main routes leading to both the coast and mountain resorts.

The highest traffic volume was expected today, Friday, August 14, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., especially on outbound routes from Nicosia and Limassol. Another large wave of traffic is expected on Sunday on the return journey.

More patrols across the entire road network

According to Giorgos Milis, responsible for road safety at the Police Traffic Department, the measures include increased presence of officers and patrols throughout the road network.

Where necessary, police officers will also manually regulate traffic to reduce congestion and make it easier for drivers to pass.

The police point out that experience from previous years shows a significant increase in traffic during the weekend of August 15.

This applies primarily to highways, main intercity roads and routes leading to seaside towns and mountain resorts.

The police will monitor the most serious offenses

Increased activities will not be limited to traffic management.

Officers will be paying particular attention to offences which, according to police, have contributed to serious and fatal accidents in recent years.

The following will be inspected in particular:

• driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs,
• speeding,
• driving without wearing a seat belt,
• riding a motorcycle or scooter without a helmet,
• dangerous overtaking,
• using a mobile phone while driving.

Today the busiest time is until 8:00 PM

According to police, the main wave of departures from Nicosia began on Friday afternoon. Between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM Increased traffic is expected towards the coast and mountain towns.

The police expect a similar situation on the roads leading from Limassol towards the coastal regions and Troodos.

Drivers should therefore expect a larger number of cars and possible manual traffic control on the busiest sections.

Returns on Sunday between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM

A second major wave of movement is expected on Sunday, August 16.

According to the police, increased traffic volume may last from approximately 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m..

There will also be more patrols on the roads, and in places where there are larger traffic jams, officers will regulate traffic.

The police are appealing, above all, to drive carefully and avoid behaviors that may lead to accidents during one of the most intense travel weekends in August.
