Lost documents in Cyprus. What to do with your ID, passport, and driving license?
Lost documents in Cyprus can mean much more than just having to get a new ID card. If the wallet also contained payment cards, a driving license or a Yellow Slip, each of these items must be reported separately.
The most important thing is to follow the correct order: block the payment card immediately, report the theft to the Cypriot police, and report the loss of your Polish ID card or passport so that the document can be invalidated. First, block your payment card
If your card has disappeared along with your documents, it is worth starting with it.
Time is of the essence.
You can block or cancel your card in your banking app or by calling your bank. The Polish Bank Association also operates a card blocking system, available at:

The system redirects the call to the appropriate bank.
If any transactions appear on your account that you didn't execute, you should immediately report them to your bank and file a complaint. In cases of theft or fraud, you may also need proof of a police report.
So it's not worth waiting an hour at the police station with an active card in a stolen wallet.

It's worth knowing
Blocking and canceling a card are not always the same thing
A temporary card block can usually be lifted if the wallet is found. Blocking is irreversible and means you'll need to get a new card. Policies vary by bank.
Lost or stolen? It makes a difference.
If a wallet has disappeared and we do not know where we left it, we are dealing with a loss of documents.
If it was taken out of a bag, taken from a car or we have other reasons to believe that a crime has been committed, we report it. theft.
Cyprus Police offers an electronic service for reporting the loss of certain documents. However, using this service requires an authenticated CY Login account, so for tourists, it's usually easier to visit the nearest police station.
In the event of theft, it's worth obtaining written confirmation of the report. This may be needed later by banks, insurers, car rental companies, or offices issuing new documents.
Don't call 112 just because your wallet is missing.
Numbers 112 and 199 are intended in Cyprus for emergency situations requiring immediate intervention.
If your documents are simply missing, please contact the nearest police station or call the police number. 1460.
The situation is different if a robbery has just occurred, someone is in danger, or the crime is still in progress. In such cases, you should call 911.

Polish ID card lost
The loss of a Polish identity card during a stay abroad must be reported immediately to the Polish consul.
In Cyprus the proper one is Consulate of the Republic of Poland in NicosiaReporting the loss of an ID card is free of charge and the document will be invalidated.
When reporting in person, you can receive a certificate confirming the loss of your ID card.
However, you must remember: the certificate is not an identity document or a travel document.
You cannot board a plane or cross the border on this basis.
The consulate does not issue new ID cards.
This often surprises Poles living abroad.
The consulate does not issue Polish ID cards.
We can accept reports of lost documents, but we won't be able to issue a new plastic ID card in Nicosia. Applications for such a card are handled by the appropriate municipal authority in Poland.
If we live in Cyprus, we can still use a valid Polish passport.
After losing your PESEL ID card, your PESEL number may be blocked.
Reporting the loss of an ID card by an adult also results in the blocking of his or her PESEL number.
This is intended to make it more difficult to use stolen data to take out a loan, borrow money or conclude certain financial agreements.
The PESEL number suspension doesn't automatically disappear after receiving a new ID card. If you later want to undo it, you'll need to do it yourself, for example, via the mObywatel app.
The loss of a document can also be reported in the bank's Restricted Documents system.
Polish passport lost
The loss, theft or damage of your passport should be reported as soon as possible.
In Cyprus, this can be done through the Polish Consulate in Nicosia. In certain cases, electronic reporting of lost passports is also available through a Polish online service.
Once the application is accepted, the passport will be invalidated.
There is a very important rule here: If you later find your reported passport, you can no longer travel with it.
The invalidation of a document cannot be undone.
I lost my passport, but I have ID. Can I return?
Yes.
A Polish citizen may travel between Poland and the Republic of Cyprus on the basis of a valid passport or a valid identity card.
If you have lost your passport but still have a valid ID, you can travel using your ID.
Similarly, if we have lost our ID card but have a valid passport, we do not need an additional document solely because of the loss of the ID card.
The problem occurs when they disappear both travel documents.
I lost my ID and passport. How can I get back to Poland?
In such a situation, please contact the Polish Consulate in Nicosia.
After confirming your identity and Polish citizenship, the consul may issue a temporary passport enabling return to the place of permanent residence.
In urgent cases, especially after document theft and before a scheduled flight, it's best not to wait until the last minute. It's best to contact the Polish Consulate by phone or email as soon as possible.
According to the tariff in force from 1 January 2026, the issuance of a temporary passport costs 50 euro.

"I have mDowód on my phone, so I'll fly"
NO.
The mDowód in the mObywatel application is not a travel document.
It won't replace a physical ID card or passport when crossing the border. A photo of the ID card or a scan of the passport's identification page saved on your phone won't suffice either.
The app can help you report a lost document, check your data and block your PESEL number, but it will not allow you to board a plane instead of a valid travel document.
Polish driving license lost
The situation here is different than with a passport.
The consulate does not issue new driving licenses.
If a document is lost or stolen, you should report the matter to the local police. The next steps depend primarily on the person's usual place of residence.
This is particularly important because the situation of a tourist may be different from that of a Pole living permanently in Cyprus.
A tourist and a resident of Cyprus are two different cases.
If we live permanently in Poland and only stay in Cyprus during our holidays, the loss of our Polish driving license does not mean that the Cypriot office will automatically issue a duplicate.
A document replacing a lost driving licence is generally issued by the country of the driver's habitual residence.
You should not assume that a photo of your driving license on your phone, a photocopy of it, or a document in the app will be accepted by the police or the car rental company.
Temporary certificates related to the loss of a driving licence also do not have to be recognised in all European Union countries.
What if I live in Cyprus?
The Cyprus Road Transport Department provides for the possibility of issuing a new document following the loss, theft or destruction of a driving licence to a person normally residing in the Republic of Cyprus.
The office may require, among other things:
- application form;
- identity document;
- photography;
- confirmation of habitual residence in Cyprus;
- police certificates of loss or theft of a document;
- confirmation of your qualifications.
In the case of a Polish driving license, the Cypriot office may require additional verification of eligibility in Poland. Therefore, it's worth confirming the current list of documents and the fee directly with the Road Transport Department before your visit.
Can you drive without a physical driving license?
It is not worth assuming that you can continue driving without any problems.
Just having the authorization in the Polish register does not mean that the Cypriot police or the rental company will accept a photo of the document on the phone.
The terms and conditions of car rentals are particularly important. The rental company may require presentation of an original, physical driver's license and refuse to provide the vehicle to anyone who loses it.
The safest thing to do is to stop driving until you receive clear information from the police, the relevant authority and – in the case of a rented vehicle – the rental company.
Lost Yellow Slip or Residence Card
This is a separate formality that Poles living on the island must remember.
If you lose your Cypriot residence permit, you should report it to the police and then contact the Migration Department to have it reissued.
If your Yellow Slip, residence card or other migration document has disappeared along with your wallet, submitting your Polish ID card and passport to the consulate will not be enough.
Each of these documents is subject to a separate procedure.

What if the documents are found the next day?
In the case of a payment card, it all depends on what exactly we have done.
If you've only temporarily blocked the app, your bank may allow you to unblock it. If your card has been blocked, it shouldn't be used again and you'll need to order a new one.
The situation is different with state documents.
A passport reported as lost is invalid and cannot be used again., even if found several hours later.
A similar procedure should be followed with a revoked ID card. Attempting to travel with a document listed in the system as lost may result in its confiscation and problems during inspection.
What to do if your entire wallet is gone?
Order of operation
1. Block or cancel payment cards.

2. Report the theft to the Cyprus Police.
Please keep the confirmation you receive.
3. Report the loss of your ID card and passport.
The documents should be invalidated as soon as possible.
4. Check the PESEL number blocking.

5. Contact the Polish Consulate in Nicosia.
This is necessary if you do not have any valid travel document and need to travel.
6. Establish a driving license procedure.
It depends, among other things, on the country of habitual residence.
7. Report the loss of your Yellow Slip or residence card.
Then apply to the Migration Department to re-issue the document.
Don't wait until your visit to the police station is over.

How to prepare for the loss of documents?
It is worth keeping in a safe place:
- numbers of the most important documents;
- a photo or scan of the passport identification page;
- copy of ID card;
- insurance policy details;
- bank telephone number;
- access to the trusted profile and the mObywatel application;
- contact details for the Polish Consulate in Nicosia.
A copy of the document does not replace the original, but may make it easier to confirm data during a conversation with the consul, police, bank or insurer.
When traveling, it is also worth following a simple rule: If we have a passport and an ID card, we do not have to carry both documents in the same wallet.
Losing one of them is a serious setback.
Losing both at the same time may mean having to visit Nicosia before returning home.
