August rainfall reached 255% of normal. Locally, it reached as much as 1,593%.

August rainfall in Cyprus completely changed the statistics after the recent storms. By 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 20, the average for the areas controlled by the Republic had already reached 255% of the monthly norm, according to data from the Department of Meteorology.

Even more surprising are the data from individual stations. At Gefyri tis Panagias, as many as 1593% of local norm for August, in Lythrodontas 1270%, and in Kornos 1108%. All measuring stations included in the list have already exceeded their normal value for the entire month.

August Rainfall in Cyprus. A Few Days Changed Everything

The change is particularly visible if we compare the latest data with the situation from just a few days ago.

Until August 17, the average rainfall was 1.2 mm, which is only 41% of the monthly normAfter subsequent storms, the rate increased to 255%.

This means that an unusual series of August rainfalls in a very short time completely reversed the month's statistics.

Almost 16 times more than usual

The greatest exceedance of the norm was recorded at the station Gefyri tis Panagias – 1593%.

The next places are occupied by:

  • Lythrodontas – 1270%
  • Kornos – 1108%
  • Larnaca Airport – 800%
  • Platania – 471%

However, it is worth reading these numbers properly.

1593% does not mean that hundreds of millimeters of rain fell in that location. The percentage shows the ratio of this year's rainfall to the normal value for August at a given station. August is a month that typically receives very little rainfall.

Therefore, even a relatively short but intense series of storms can cause huge percentage exceedances of monthly norms.

All stations have already exceeded the August norm

This time, however, it is not just about a few places that have been hit by particularly strong storms.

According to the Department of Meteorology Every station included in the list has already exceeded its normal rainfall value for August.

This is particularly interesting after the first half of the month, when rain occurred mainly locally and the average for the entire area remained clearly below normal.

The last few days have completely changed this picture.

Also above normal since October

Statistics covering a much longer period also look good.

From October 1 to August 20 the average rainfall is 585.7 mm. 117% of normal value for this period.

Also in this comparison, all measuring stations exceeded 100% of their norm.

This, however, does not automatically resolve water resource problems. Recent rains have significantly improved rainfall statistics, but – as the Department of Water Resources Development has previously emphasized – isolated summer episodes do not change long-term water management planning.

August, which was hard to predict

First, localized rain, then thunderstorms, hail, and a yellow weather alert. Now the data shows just how unusual the second half of the month was.

As recently as August 17, the average was only 41% of normal.

Three days later it was already 255%.

And in some places, this August brought more than ten times the amount of rain typical for that month.
