Street reconstruction in Larnaca will include bus lanes and 22 km of bicycle paths.

A major street reconstruction in Larnaca will affect 24 roads, including 11 major avenues. The city will also feature bus lanes, over 22 km of cycling infrastructure, new sidewalks, and hundreds of crossings and ramps for people with disabilities.

The investment value is €18.3 million plus VAT. Work began on June 9, 2026, and is scheduled for completion in August 2027. The first section of the rebuilt Faneromenis Avenue has already opened to drivers.

The reconstruction of streets in Larnaca will cover 24 roads

The project is part of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Its goal is to improve safety, accessibility of public spaces, and the functioning of public transport.

The works will cover 11 major avenues, five secondary roads – including two in Aradippou – and eight local streets.

The scope of the investment is not limited to road resurfacing. Intersections, sidewalks, bus stops, and some underground infrastructure will also be rebuilt.

The project includes approximately 10.4 km of bus lanes. Bus stop infrastructure will also be built, and new or upgraded traffic lights will be installed at selected intersections.

Bus lanes are planned, among others, on Eleftherias Street and Nikos and Despina Pattichi, Artemidos and Makariou Avenues.

Over 22 km of cycling routes

The longest element of the investment will be the cycling infrastructure. The project involves the construction of approximately 22.3 km of lanes and roads designated for cyclists.

The routes are to be built, among others, along:

• Akropoleos Avenue in Aradippou,
• Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue,
• Yiannos Kranidiotis Avenue,
• Nikos and Despina Pattichi Avenue,
• Artemidos Avenue,
• Faneromenis Avenue,
• Lemesou Avenue.

Small bollards will be installed on some sections to prevent drivers from parking in the bike lanes. These barriers won't be installed along the entire length of the route, but rather in areas particularly susceptible to vehicle blockage.

New sidewalks, walkways and driveways

The project includes the construction or reconstruction of approximately 13 km of sidewalks. 182 Pelican and Zebra crossings for pedestrians and cyclists are also planned.

174 ramps will be built for people with disabilities. Road markings and signs will be replaced or supplemented, and new traffic signals will be installed at selected intersections.

The work also includes storm sewerage, water mains, and irrigation systems. New vegetation will be planted where the underground infrastructure allows.

The first section of Faneromenis Avenue is now open

The first completed section of Faneromenis Avenue was opened to drivers on September 14. This is the section leading from the Cineplex roundabout towards the Faneromenis roundabout.

Work on subsequent sections will be carried out in stages. Until August 2027, drivers should expect changes to traffic management, traffic bottlenecks, and local detours.

The project's completion date will depend on the progress of work on individual streets. Issues with existing underground utilities, among other factors, may impact the schedule.

Park & Ride on the outskirts of town

The reconstruction will be complemented by two Park & Ride hubs in the Aradippou and Kalo Chorio areas. Drivers will be able to leave their cars on the outskirts and then continue their journey using public transport.

A parking lot in Aradippou is planned near the Rizoelia roundabout. A second interchange is planned at the Kalo Chorio roundabout.

The system is intended to reduce the number of cars entering the city centre and improve connections with roads leading towards Nicosia, Limassol and Paralimni.

Drivers will face difficulties

The reconstruction is intended to facilitate travel by bus, bicycle, and foot. However, until the project is completed, residents and commuters to Larnaca should prepare for disruptions.

Traffic arrangements may change as work begins. Before traveling, it's worth checking local traffic reports and allowing extra time to travel through the parts of the city undergoing reconstruction.
