Compensation after the storm in Cyprus? Damage records have begun.

Compensation for the storm in Cyprus will be subject to a decision by the Council of Ministers. Following Saturday's gales, downpours, and storms, official damage accounting has already begun, and President Nikos Christodoulides has announced state support for those affected by the violent weather.

This is also important information for Poles living on the island whose home, car, business, or other property may have been damaged. Detailed assistance rules have not yet been announced, so at this stage, it is crucial to thoroughly document any losses incurred.

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou confirmed that damage registration has already started on Saturday afternoon.

The first teams worked in the Nicosia district, and operations continued on Sunday.

From Monday, district administration employees will also appear in other parts of the island, including the Polis Chrysochous area.

It is not yet known how long the full inventory will take.

The Minister explained that this would depend on the number of cases requiring investigation.

The Council of Ministers will decide on aid

The most important information for the injured people is that the decision regarding financial support has not yet been made.

Constantinos Ioannou informed that after the completion of the records, the case will be presented to the Council of Ministers.

It is up to the government to decide on the principles and scope of compensation.

The Minister also pointed out that there are already previous decisions of the Council of Ministers regarding assistance in the event of natural disasters.

These included, among other things, specific amounts related to losses incurred by households and businesses.

This does not mean, however, that identical rules will automatically be applied after Saturday's storm.

The final decision must be made by the Council of Ministers.

President: the state will support the victims

Nikos Christodoulides assured on Sunday that all responsible services remain on alert.

The president said that after assessing the effects of the severe weather, the administration will look for ways to help those who need it.

He also announced that the state will stand by the injured parties and support them.

For now, however, this is a political declaration preceding the formal decision on the financial mechanism.

Do you have damaged property? Document everything.

Until detailed rules are announced, there is no form or official list of documents needed to apply for assistance.

However, people who have suffered losses can now prepare materials that may be needed later.

It's worth it:

• take photos and videos of any damage;
• prepare documentation before starting repairs, if possible;
• keep receipts and invoices for urgent security work;
• keep estimates and quotes for repairs;
• record the date and circumstances of the damage;
• in the case of insured property, also report the incident to your insurer.

If, for safety reasons, you need to quickly remove a damaged element or start a repair, it is worth making the most accurate photographic documentation possible beforehand.

What about Poles living in Cyprus?

This is an important issue for our readers.

In official Sunday announcements criteria regarding citizenship, residence status or property ownership have not yet been provided.

Therefore, it is not possible to determine today whether every citizen of another EU country legally residing in Cyprus will be able to benefit from the future programme on the same terms.

It is also unknown whether support will depend on whether the injured party is a property owner, tenant, entrepreneur or has a specific type of insurance.

These rules are yet to be defined by the government.

This is why Poles who have suffered losses should also document the damage now., instead of waiting for the forms to be published.

If subsequent legislation covers their situation, complete documentation can make reporting much easier.

There is no form or deadlines yet

At this stage, the following have not yet been published:

• application form,
• deadline for submitting applications,
• specific amounts,
• list of damages eligible for support,
• rules regarding insured property,
• criteria for citizens of other countries.

Therefore, you should be wary of information appearing on social media suggesting that applications can already be submitted or that certain amounts have been guaranteed.

The official damage tally is already underway, but the financial assistance mechanism has not yet been finally approved.

“Compensation” or state aid?

It is also worth explaining the difference.

The Minister of Internal Affairs speaks openly about the decision of the Council of Ministers regarding compensation, but in practice it is a special state aid mechanism activated after natural disaster events.

Therefore, at this stage, it is not an automatic compensation to which every injured person is already entitled.

Only the government's decision will determine who will be able to receive money, for what damages and in what amount.

What will happen now?

First, district administrations must complete their records and determine the scale of the losses.

The matter will then go to the Council of Ministers.

Only after its decision will it be known what the rules for assistance will be and how injured parties will be able to apply for it.
