One of Limassol's symbols will be ablaze with color. The first show will be at Christmas?

Limassol Water Tower, one of the city's most iconic engineering monuments, could be getting a completely new look this year. The City Council approved the installation of modern lighting that will allow the structure to change color depending on the occasion.

The first major presentation of the new system is to be Christmas lights for Christmas 2026Before the project can begin, however, its cost and technical requirements must be determined. If the analysis reveals no obstacles, the historic structure is expected to shine for the first time in its new form before the end of the year.

Limassol Water Tower Will Change Colors

The idea was proposed by city councilor Michalis Vassiliou. It first reached the city's Development and Tourism Committee and was then approved by the City Council.

It's not just about hanging Christmas lights.

The idea is much broader – an installation is to be created that will enable lighting the tower with different colors depending on the event.

The colors could change during national holidays and anniversaries, international days related to health and social campaigns, as well as on the occasion of important events in the city.

A victory for AEL, Apollon, or Aris? The Tower can show it.

One of the most interesting ideas is to use lighting to celebrate the successes of local sports clubs.

According to the presented concept, the tower could change color when one of the Limassol teams wins the championship or cup.

The material presenting the project includes examples of: blue, yellow and green, corresponding to the colors of the city's clubs.

Thus, the tower could play a similar role to characteristic buildings and structures in many other cities around the world, which are illuminated to commemorate important events.

It is visible from many parts of the city.

The choice of this particular structure is not accidental.

The water tower is visible from many locations in Limassol. According to the author of the proposal, this gives it much greater potential as a city symbol than simply illuminating administrative buildings.

For many residents, it is more than just an unused element of old infrastructure.

Over the decades it has become a landmark and one of the most recognizable elements of old Limassol. It is also known to local residents simply as deposit – tank.

It was founded almost a hundred years ago

The history of the tower dates back to the late 1920s.

Construction began in 1929, and the construction was completed in 1930 during the term of then-mayor Christodoulos Hadjipavlou. It was built as part of the city's new water supply system.

The metal tank is located at a height of approximately 40 meters, is about 9 meters in diameter and holds 500 m³ of water.

The tower remained one of the fundamental elements of the Limassol water supply system until 1947, when a new underground distribution system was introduced.

Today it is one of the few preserved monuments of former urban engineering on the island.

She has already lit up Limassol once before

Interestingly, the idea of using light to highlight a tower is not entirely new.

IN In 1999, the structure was ceremonially illuminated, and the event was expected to attract thousands of residents. To mark the start of the new millennium, a luminous number also appeared on the tower „2000”.

However, the current project aims to go a step further.

Instead of one permanent lighting system, it is a system that allows you to adjust the appearance of one of the city's symbols to the current occasion.

First you need to count the costs

This does not yet mean that the installation is ready for installation.

Once the City Council approves the concept, the next step is to prepare a technical and financial analysis. This will determine how precisely the system will be implemented and how much it will cost.

However, the goal is clearly defined: If the analysis allows the project to be implemented, the new lighting is expected to debut during Christmas 2026..

After almost a century, the structure that once marked the city's technological development and provided water to its inhabitants may once again become one of Limassol's most visible landmarks – this time after dark.
