Buses in Limassol are getting more expensive. New ticket prices from November 5th

From On November 5, 2026, bus ticket prices in Limassol will increaseA single ride purchased from the driver will cost €2.50 instead of the current €2. However, the current price will remain the same when paying with an eWallet.

The largest increase will be for the seven-day ticket, which will increase from €25 to €35. Daily and monthly tickets will also become more expensive. Operator EMEL attributes the changes to rising costs of fuel, spare parts, bus maintenance, and staffing.

New bus ticket prices in Limassol

The changes will affect the five most frequently used ticket types. For a single journey, the price will depend on the chosen payment method.

Passengers purchasing a ticket directly with cash will pay €2.50. Using funds stored in an eWallet will still cost €2.

The weekly ticket will become more expensive

Those purchasing a seven-day ticket will see the biggest increase. Its price will increase by 10 euros, or 40 percent.

The price of an anonymous monthly ticket will increase by 15 euros, from 45 to 60 euros. This means an increase of more than 33 percentThe price of a monthly personal ticket will increase significantly less, with the price going down to 50 euros instead of 45 euros.

A day ticket will become more expensive by one euro, and a single ticket paid in cash by 50 cents.

For regular bus users, the most cost-effective solution will remain the personalized monthly pass. After the price increase, it will be €10 cheaper than the anonymous version valid for the same period.

eWallet will allow you to keep the current price

Passengers using eWallet will still pay €2 for a single journey. Compared to purchasing a ticket with cash, this translates to a saving of 50 cents per journey.

With two trips per day for 20 working days, the difference will be €20 per month. EMEL is clearly encouraging passengers to use electronic payment methods instead of purchasing tickets from the driver.

Before topping up your wallet or purchasing a season ticket, please make sure that you are using the correct type of card and that the product is valid on the EMEL network.

EMEL points to rising costs

The operator explains that the public passenger transport contract allows for tariffs to be updated every two years, taking into account inflation.

Cost calculations take into account factors such as fuel prices, bus maintenance, spare parts, and labor costs. According to information provided by EMEL, fuel costs have increased by approximately 30 percent compared to the previous reference period.

Maximum ticket prices are set by regulation of the Minister of Transport. Individual operators, however, may implement their own pricing policies as long as they remain within the established limits.

EMEL maintains a uniform fare across its entire service area, even though the profitability of individual routes varies significantly. Some routes are loss-making, while others carry significantly more passengers.

In the Cypriot model, the state subsidizes the operation of routes, and not directly each ticket purchased by a passenger.

More and more passengers travel by bus

The increases come at a time of growing interest in public transport in Limassol. According to the operator, average bus occupancy is 64 percent.

Passenger numbers increased by about 10 percent, from 6 million to 6.6 million annually. This represents an increase of approximately 600,000 trips.

The growing popularity of buses may be related to factors such as traffic jams, difficulty finding parking spaces, and the cost of maintaining a car. However, higher ticket prices may particularly affect those who commute to work or school daily by public transport.

In Nicosia, the price increases appeared earlier

Some ticket prices have already increased in August in Nicosia. A single journey paid for in cash costs €2.70, while a personalized monthly pass costs €66.90.

After the November change, a single ticket in Limassol will still be 20 cents cheaper than in the capital. The difference for a monthly ticket will be significantly greater – €50 in Limassol versus €66.90 in Nicosia.

New EMEL prices will come into effect November 5, 2026Until that date, passengers will continue to benefit from the current fare.
