
Yellow weather alert. Severe thunderstorms and hail expected on Tuesday
Yellow weather alert for Cyprus will be in force today, Tuesday, August 18, from 10 a.m. 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.The Department of Meteorology warns of locally severe storms, which may develop primarily in the mountains, inland, and possibly on the east coast.
During storms it is also possible hail, and the local rainfall intensity can range from 35 to 55 mm per hourThe unstable air mass will remain over the region through Wednesday, but the weather will begin to stabilize from Thursday.

The warning covers five hours – from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The greatest probability of strong phenomena occurring concerns mountainous areas and the central part of the islandStorms may also occur on the east coast.
The phenomena are expected to be localized. This means that one part of the island could experience an intense storm while another region experiences calm weather.
Locally up to 55 mm of rain per hour
What draws most attention is the forecasted rainfall intensity.
During the strongest storms it may fall locally 35–55 mm of rain per hourHail and temporary wind gusts are also possible.
The start of the day will be mostly sunny, but only in the afternoon and early afternoon will locally heavier clouds develop, which may lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Still warm despite the storms
Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to reach approximately 34°C inland.
On the west and south-west coast it will be around 30°C, on the other coasts around 32°C, and in the highest parts of the mountains around 25°C.
During storms, winds can periodically reach around 5 on the Beaufort scale.
Thunderstorms are still possible on Wednesday
The unstable weather will not completely end when Tuesday's warning expires.
On Wednesday, it will be sunny for most of the day, but in the afternoon and afternoon hours there may be showers again. isolated showers or thunderstorms in the mountains and inland of the island.
The situation should calm down starting Thursday. Thursday and Friday are expected to be mostly sunny, with temperatures starting to rise significantly and expected to be above average climatic values for this period by Friday.
