Cat sterilization in Cyprus. Program to be expanded from October

Cyprus's nationwide cat sterilization program is set to expand from October. Animal Welfare Commissioner Elias Myrianthous is seeking additional funding to increase the number of sterilizations and more effectively reduce the stray cat population.

New regulations are also being planned for volunteers conducting TNR operations, including trapping, sterilizing, and re-releasing cats in their habitat. Marking animals during treatment and creating regional temporary shelters for abandoned animals are also being considered.

More money for sterilizing cats

The expansion of the programme was one of the topics discussed at the meeting between the Commissioner for Animal Welfare and representatives of the Veterinary Services.

The current budget is to be re-examined. Authorities will examine the possibility of allocating additional funds beyond the amount previously planned for the program.

However, it has not been announced yet:

• amount of additional financing,
• number of treatments planned from October,
• list of participating veterinary offices,
• rules for reporting colonies of homeless cats,
• exact start date of the extended program.

This means that the announcement does not yet mean that you can independently register your cat for free sterilization at any clinic.

What is the TNR method?

TNR is an abbreviation of the English words trap, neutral, return or reintegrationThe method involves capturing a stray cat, spaying or neutering it, providing post-operative care, and then releasing it back to its natural habitat.

The goal isn't to round up all the cats and transport them to shelters. The goal is to gradually reduce the number of new litters in existing colonies.

During the meeting, the possibility of issuing official permits to volunteers to conduct such activities was discussed. The Veterinary Services agreed to initiate the process following applications submitted by animal protection organizations.

The rules for obtaining authorizations have not yet been presented, nor is there any information on whether they will require training, cooperation with a registered organization or reporting to the appropriate authority.

Cats may be marked during the procedure

Authorities are considering introducing a tag that would allow for easy identification of cats included in the program. This is intended to prevent animals that have already been sterilized from being recaptured and taken to the vet.

The method to be used has not yet been determined. TNR programs in various countries use, among other methods, a distinctive ear tag, but Cypriot authorities have not yet announced a final decision on this matter.

Places are needed for abandoned animals

Discussions also focused on animals that cannot be immediately released or placed for adoption. The lack of sufficient, suitable temporary housing remains a problem.

The Commissioner and the Veterinary Services declared their support to the regional organisations of local authorities of the EOA in establishing such facilities.

They are intended to provide temporary shelter for abandoned animals. The location, number of planned facilities, and launch date have not yet been announced.

The program does not automatically cover domestic cats.

The nationwide program is primarily aimed at reducing the number of stray cats. It should not be assumed that it means free sterilization of every pet with an owner.

Cat colony owners should await detailed information regarding applications and participating organizations. They should also refrain from attempting to capture animals without appropriate equipment, experience, and veterinary care arrangements.
