In the abandoned Varosha district of Famagusta lies a place that has fascinated history and car enthusiasts for years.

Behind the dusty windows of a former Toyota dealership, cars that never made it to their owners still sit. Some of them have only a few dozen kilometers on the clock.

This is one of the most unusual symbols of divided Cyprus.

Everything stopped in August 1974

In the summer of 1974, Varosha was one of the most luxurious resorts in the Eastern Mediterranean.

After the Turkish military intervention, residents fled in a hurry, convinced that they would return to their homes after a few days.

However, this did not happen.

The city was sealed off and remained inaccessible for decades. Many shops, hotels, and workshops remained exactly as they were when they were abandoned.

Cars that never left

One of the most famous places is the former Toyota showroom.

Through the windows, you can still see Corollas, Coronas, Crowns, and Celicas from the early 1970s. Some of the cars had only about 60 kilometers on them—practically just the distance from the port to the showroom.

Over the years, some of the vehicles have been damaged by moisture, leaking roofs, and vandalism. Nevertheless, the sight of the cars parked exactly where they were left over half a century ago is still impressive.

Can I go inside?

NO.

Although parts of Varosha were opened to visitors in 2020, entry to the abandoned buildings remains prohibited.

The Toyota showroom can only be viewed from the outside. Authorities are not allowing visitors to enter the interior for safety and security reasons.

Through dusty shop windows, you can still see Corollas, Coronas, Crowns, and Celicas from the early 1970s. For more than half a century, the cars sat in almost the same spot, waiting for customers who never returned.

Moisture, the passage of time and lack of maintenance have left their mark on them, but the sight of these cars still makes a huge impression.
