Cyprus weather: rain and storms will stay with us longer

The weather in Cyprus will remain unsettled after the weekend. Local showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible from Sunday to Wednesday afternoon. Rain is most likely in the mountains and inland areas.

This doesn't mean a complete weather breakdown, however. Mornings will be mostly sunny, with clouds beginning to develop, primarily in the afternoon. Temperatures will remain high, with temperatures expected to reach 33°C in the interior.

Cyprus weather on Sunday

Sunday, September 20, will start the day mostly sunny. However, as temperatures rise, clouds will begin to develop, which could bring scattered showers or a few thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Precipitation is expected primarily in the Troodos Mountains and parts of the interior. The likelihood of rain will be lower on the coast, although locally there may also be increased cloud cover.

The wind will blow mainly from the southwest and northwest, with a force of 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale. It may increase locally to 4-5. The sea will be calm to slightly rough.

Up to 33°C despite scattered showers

The temperature on Sunday will rise to approximately:

• 33°C in the interior of the island,
• 29°C on the west coast,
• 31°C on the remaining sections of the coast,
• 24°C in the highest parts of the mountains.

At night, the temperature will drop to around 19°C in the interior, 21°C by the sea and 13°C in the highest parts of the Troodos Mountains.

Despite the possibility of rain, no significant cooling is expected. Precipitation will be primarily local and fleeting.

Rain possible from Monday to Wednesday

Similar weather is expected in Cyprus on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The first part of the day should be mostly sunny. However, developing clouds in the afternoon may bring isolated showers and local thunderstorms.

The highest probability of rain will once again be over the mountains, but precipitation cannot be ruled out in parts of the interior. Temperatures are not expected to change significantly and will remain close to typical values for this time of year.

The forecast doesn't indicate multiple days of rain across the entire island. One locality might experience intense but brief rain while a few kilometers away it will remain dry and sunny.

Beware of sudden changes in the mountains

Those planning to visit the Troodos Mountains should consider the possibility of rapid cloud cover and brief thunderstorms. It's a good idea to bring a light rain jacket and check the current conditions before starting your hike.

Locally heavy rain may cause roads to become slippery and visibility may temporarily deteriorate. Drivers should exercise particular caution when traveling on mountainous roads.

Thunderstorms can develop relatively quickly. Avoid sheltering under isolated trees or staying on exposed elevations if thunder is audible.
