Limassol Bypass to Be Quieter: Noise Barriers Cost Over €5 Million

Further noise barriers are planned for the Limassol Bypass. The project covers selected sections between the Germasogeia and Polemidia interchanges, and the estimated contract value is over €5.1 million.

Work has not yet begun. Neither has the contractor been selected nor the contract been signed. The documentation indicates January 5, 2027, as the planned contract start date, but this date may change depending on the outcome of the tender process.

Screens on the Limassol bypass

The tender, announced by the Cyprus Department of Public Works, covers the combined Phases 2A and 2B of the project. The project involves the installation of acoustic barriers on selected sections of the bypass between the grade-separated junctions of Germasogeia and Polemidia.

This is one of the busiest stretches of road in Limassol, used daily by cars, buses, and trucks traveling between the eastern and western parts of the city.

For residents of buildings near the road, this means the constant hum of engines, tires, and passing trucks. The noise is especially noticeable in the mornings, afternoons, and at night, when road noise can carry further.

The new structures are intended to limit the spread of noise towards nearby residential areas.

It is not yet known where exactly they will stand.

The official contract description confirms that the screens will be installed between the Germasogeia and Polemidia junctions. However, a complete, easily accessible map showing all the planned locations has not been published.

The final one was also not given:

• screen lengths,
• height of the structure,
• number of separate sections,
• the colors and appearance of the covers,
• technology used to suppress noise.

Older materials relating solely to Phase 2A indicated approximately two kilometers of screens. However, this cannot be assumed to be the total length of the installation in the current, expanded order, which also covers Phase 2B.

Over 5.1 million euros for the project

The estimated value of the contract is €5,135,500. This is not yet the final investment cost. The final amount will be known after the tender is concluded and a contract is signed with the selected contractor.

The project is to be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.

The procedure is being conducted using a design-build approach. The future contractor will be responsible not only for installing the screens but also for developing detailed technical documentation.

When can work begin?

The tender was published on June 2, 2026, and the deadline for submitting bids was July 22. The official public procurement system still does not have an award date.

Therefore, there is no public confirmation that a contractor has been selected, and the contract disclosed in the system has not been signed.

The documentation indicates January 5, 2027, as the planned contract start date. Implementation is scheduled for 24 months. If the schedule is maintained, the project should be completed in early 2029.

However, the date remains tentative. Bid evaluation, contractor selection formalities, potential appeals, and detailed design preparation may impact the actual commencement date.

There was also no information provided about planned lane closures or other disruptions. Such details should be announced closer to the start of work.

Will screens actually reduce noise?

The effectiveness of noise barriers depends on several factors. Their height, length, airtightness, and distance from the roadway and protected buildings are all important.

If the screen is broken at the exit or only installed for a short distance, some sound may still reach buildings from the side. The design doesn't completely eliminate noise, but it limits its direct propagation.

The greatest improvement should be felt by residents of houses and apartments located directly on the sheltered sections of the route. The exact impact will only be assessed once the technical design is presented and construction is completed.

Further changes on Limassol roads

The noise barriers are one of several road infrastructure projects in the city. Limassol also plans to install detectors that will allow traffic lights to respond to actual traffic volume.

The next important stage of the bypass project will be the announcement of the tender results. Only then will it be known who will implement the project, the final price, and whether the planned contract start date will remain valid.
