Electric Scooter on the Highway: Dangerous Footage from Cyprus

A person riding an electric scooter on a Cypriot highway was captured in the middle of a traffic jam. The video shows the scooter user on a road where other vehicles are traveling at much higher speeds.

The dangerous situation occurred on Friday, September 11th. The exact highway on which the recording was taken was not disclosed. It is also unknown whether the scooter rider was stopped or fined by police.

Scooter between cars

The published footage shows a person riding an electric scooter amidst normal traffic. The sheer speed difference between the small scooter and other vehicles poses a significant risk.

A driver may notice a scooter user too late, especially after dark, on a curve, or when changing lanes. A person riding a scooter, on the other hand, is virtually unprotected in the event of a collision with a car.

Even without an immediate accident, the presence of a scooter can force other drivers to brake sharply or change lanes suddenly.

Cyprus tightens scooter regulations

In May 2026, Cyprus published two laws amending regulations on bicycles and personal transport devices. Under the new regulations, the minimum age for using an electric scooter is 17.

The new regulations also define the locations where such devices can be used. They introduce requirements regarding their equipment and technical parameters, as well as the operating rules for rental companies.

Local authorities have been given the ability to implement additional regulations within their jurisdictions. Authorities can also confiscate scooters used illegally.

This doesn't mean that every violation will result in the seizure of the device. Consequences depend on the type of offense and the circumstances of the incident. In the case of the highway footage, there is currently no information about police intervention or a fine imposed.

The highway is no place for scooters

Electric scooters have become a popular mode of transportation in Cypriot cities and resorts. They can be found in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos, among others.

However, their users must comply with restrictions regarding age, equipment and the places in which they can move.

The highway is particularly dangerous due to heavy traffic and significant speed differences. Car drivers don't expect to encounter people on small motorcycles.

Scooters are also much more difficult to spot than cars or motorcycles. The risk increases at night, when visibility is poor, and when other vehicles are maneuvering.

It is not known whether the police intervened.

Cypriot media have not reported whether police have identified the person in the video. There is also no information about whether the scooter was seized or a fine was issued.

However, the video remains another reminder that the small size and easy availability of electric scooters do not exempt their users from following road rules.

Driving such a device onto a highway may pose a risk to the health or life of not only the user but also other road users.
