September rainfall in Cyprus reached 164 percent of normal
September rainfall in Cyprus has already significantly exceeded the average for the entire month. From September 1st to 9:00 a.m. on September 22nd, an average of 7.4 mm of rain fell in areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. The monthly norm is 4.5 mm.
This means that by the end of the month, average rainfall had already reached 164 percent of normal. The most surprising result was recorded in Frenaros, where 26 mm of rain fell – a staggering 2,167 percent of the amount considered normal there for the entire month of September.

September rainfall in Cyprus has increased significantly
As recently as September 18th, average rainfall was 4 mm, or 89% of the monthly norm. Over the next few days, it increased to 7.4 mm, exceeding the typical monthly average.
The data shows how quickly a few local storms can change the statistics during a typically dry time of year. September remains a summer month in Cyprus, and average rainfall remains low.
For this reason, even one heavy downpour can raise the result to several hundred or several thousand percent of the local norm.
The heaviest rainfall was measured at Larnaca Airport. Since the beginning of the month, the weather station there has recorded 31.8 mm of rainfall.
Kornos saw slightly less rainfall, with 31.7 mm. Frenaros was next with 26 mm, and Pano Panagia, where 19.4 mm was measured.
Frenaros reached 2,167 percent of normal
The highest percentage was recorded not in the place with the most rainfall, but in Frenaros. This is due to the very low average for that location.
The September average in Frenaros is around 1.2 mm. A total of 26 mm represents almost 22 times more rain than is typically recorded for the entire month.
The situation is similar at Larnaca Airport, where 31.8 mm was measured, which is 1,871 percent of the local norm.
Kornos received almost the same amount of rain – 31.7 mm – but this represents 556 percent of the norm. The difference stems from the fact that the typical September rainfall in Kornos is higher than at Larnaca Airport and Frenaros.

In Pano Panagia almost four times more rain
Pano Panagia saw 19.4 mm of rain. This is 373 percent of the local September average.
The value is lower than in Frenaros, at the airport in Larnaca and in Kornos, but it still means almost four times the rainfall total typical for this location.
Statistics refer to specific measurement stations. They should not be automatically applied to entire districts. Cyprus storms are often very localized.
One town may receive several dozen millimeters of rain, while a few kilometers away there will be little or no rainfall.
A high percentage doesn't always mean the most rain
The 2,167 percent figure may sound like a historic record, but the data alone doesn't allow us to conclude that it's the largest September total in Frenaros' history.
The percentages only show comparisons to the local norm. Because September is typically exceptionally dry there, a relatively small rainfall total can be many times above average.
Of the stations listed, Larnaca Airport received the largest amount of water – 31.8 mm. The largest exceedance of the norm was recorded at Frenaros.
This distinction is important. The percentages do not directly indicate where the heaviest rainfall was or where the greatest flooding occurred.
The statistics changed in a few days
The latest data is an update of information released after the downpours on September 18. On that day, 26 mm of rain was measured at Larnaca Airport, about 15 times the local norm.
By September 22, the total had risen to 31.8 mm. The average for the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus rose from 89 to 164 percent of the monthly norm.

The latest measurements are preliminary and may be subject to later corrections by the Department of Meteorology. However, they already show that September 2026 is expected to be significantly rainier than the monthly norm.
