Parents can have their child's ID on their phone. A new feature in Cyprus.
Digital child ID in Cyprus can now be added to the "Digital Citizen" app on a parent's phone. Both mothers and fathers can use the new feature, making the document accessible without having to carry a physical copy with them every time.
There is one condition: the child must have already been issued valid physical IDThe digital version can then be used during identity checks and in other situations where the law permits the use of this document.
Child's digital ID on parent's phone
A new feature has been added to the state app "Ψηφιακός Πολίτης" – "Digital Citizen".
Each parent can have a digital version of their minor child's ID on their phone. This means both the mother and father can add it to their app independently.
The solution is primarily intended to facilitate situations in which it is necessary to quickly confirm a child's identity.
However, it is not possible to create a digital document if the child does not have a previously issued and still valid physical ID card.
Teenagers from 14 years of age can still have their own document
The new option for parents does not change the existing rules for older children.
People who have completed 14 years old, can use the "Digital Citizen" app on their own phone and store their digital identity in the app. The service's official website confirms that a verified CY Login profile is required.
Adding a child's document to the parent's application is therefore an additional option, not a replacement for the solution available to teenagers.
The digital document must be accepted
Digital documents generated by the Digital Citizen have the same identification power in Cyprus as their corresponding physical documents.
The government has previously stated that organizations and institutions should accept the document presented in the app for in-person transactions. Refusal to accept a digital document is treated the same as refusing to accept the corresponding physical document.
The Undersecretariat for Research, Innovation and Digital Policy encourages you to report cases in which a digital document has not been accepted.
We won't be able to fly abroad with this ID.
This is the most important limitation of the new feature.
The document in the Digital Citizen application is not an international travel document.
Therefore, you shouldn't consider your phone as a substitute for a physical ID card or passport when traveling abroad. Official information about the app clearly states that digital documents are intended for legal use within the Republic of Cyprus.
Therefore, you still need to take your child's physical document with you when leaving the country.
The "Digital Citizen" is becoming more and more developed
The addition of children's documents was announced by the Cypriot government as one of the next stages of the application's development in 2026. The official plan also includes, among other things, residence permits for foreigners, tickets for sporting events, and age verification solutions.
"Digital Citizen" is available on devices with operating systems iOS and Android.
