It is not only one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, but also a place shrouded in legends that has attracted travelers from all over the world for thousands of years.

Where is Petra tou Romiou located?

Petra tou Romiou is located on the southwestern coast of Cyprus, approximately 25 kilometres from Paphos, on the road to Limassol.

The characteristic limestone cliffs rising from the sea are one of the most photographed places on the island and have been a calling card of Cyprus for years.

The legend of the birth of Aphrodite

According to Greek mythology, it was here that Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, emerged from the sea foam.

Legend has it that she swam to shore on a seashell, and the place where she was born became a symbol of love, beauty, and rebirth. It is because of this story that Cyprus is still called Aphrodite's Island.

Name Petra tou Romiou does not mean "Aphrodite's Rock." It is literally translated as "Greek's Rock" or "Romiej's Rock" and refers to the Byzantine hero Digenis Akritas, who – according to legend – threw a huge boulder at the Saracen ships trying to attack the island.

Is it worth swimming here?

The beach at Petra tou Romiou has stunning views, but it is not the safest place for swimming.

The bottom is rocky, and the sea can be rough, especially in strong winds. Therefore, it's important to assess the conditions and exercise caution before entering the water.

The legend of sailing around the rock three times

There is another popular legend associated with this place.

According to local beliefs, anyone who sails around the main rock three times will be guaranteed happiness in love, eternal youth, or the fulfillment of a wish. This is, of course, just a legend, but many tourists still try their hand at it – sea conditions permitting.

The best place to watch the sunset

Petra tou Romiou is stunning at any time of day, but many photographers believe it looks most beautiful just before sunset.

The light reflecting off the limestone rocks and calm sea creates some of the most picturesque landscapes in Cyprus.

It is a perfect place for a short stopover when traveling between Paphos and Limassol, as well as for a longer walk.

The beach is accessed via a convenient underpass beneath the road. On the other side, there's a parking lot, a tourist information point, and a small café, making it easily accessible even for families with children.
