Unemployment benefits after returning from Cyprus to Poland. What's worth knowing?
Returning from Cyprus to Poland does not automatically result in the loss of entitlement to benefits related to previous employment. In many cases, people who worked in Cyprus and paid contributions there can still apply for unemployment benefits after returning home.
However, it is important to remember that specific rules arising from European Union regulations apply.
Can I receive benefits in Poland after working in Cyprus?
Yes, but how you obtain the benefit depends on your individual situation.
There are two possible solutions:
- transfer of benefits from Cyprus to Poland, if you first obtained the right to the benefit in Cyprus,
- applying for benefits in Poland taking into account periods of employment and insurance in Cyprus.
What is a U1 document?
Before leaving Cyprus, it is worth applying for a document PD U1.
It confirms periods of employment and insurance completed in Cyprus. The Polish employment office may take these periods into account when assessing eligibility for benefits. However, the document itself does not automatically grant benefits.
What if you are already receiving benefits in Cyprus?
If you are entitled to Cypriot unemployment benefits and want to look for a job in Poland, you can apply for a document PD U2.
It allows you to transfer your benefit payment to Poland for a specified period. After arrival, you must 7 days register as a job seeker in Poland and complete the formalities at the employment office.
What is the procedure after returning?
If you are returning to Poland and not using the benefit transfer, you should:
- register at the District Labor Office,
- inform about previous employment in Cyprus,
- present the PD U1 document (if previously obtained),
- wait for the decision of the Provincial Labor Office regarding the right to the benefit.
Will the benefit amount be the same as in Cyprus?
NO.
If the benefit is granted in Poland under Polish regulations, its amount will be in line with the applicable Polish rates, not the benefit amount available in Cyprus. The situation is different when the benefit is transferred based on a PD U2 document – in this case, the benefit granted by the country where the entitlement was acquired is paid for a specified period.
It's worth knowing
Do not leave Cyprus without first obtaining the document PD U1Obtaining it after returning to Poland is possible, but it usually takes much longer and may prolong the entire procedure.
It is worth preparing documents before departure
If you are planning to return to Poland after several years of working in Cyprus, it is a good idea to gather all employment and insurance documents in advance.
Thanks to this, the formalities at the Polish employment office will be much more efficient and determining the right to benefits will be easier.
