Uber and Bolt in Cyprus: What Really Works and Which App to Choose?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions by first-time visitors to Cyprus. Many tourists install the Uber app before their trip, hoping for quick and cheap rides.
However, the reality looks a bit different.
Does Uber operate in Cyprus?
NO.
Uber does not provide transportation services in Cyprus, so you cannot use the app to order a car in Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos or Nicosia.
What about Bolt?
That's it Bolt is currently the most popular ride-hailing app in Cyprus.
It works similarly to Uber – you choose your pickup location and destination, and the app shows you an approximate price before you book your ride.
Is Bolt cheaper than a regular taxi?
Not necessarily.
In Cyprus, Bolt drivers are typically the same licensed taxi drivers who also operate traditional taxi services. The final price depends on many factors, including:
- time of day,
- traffic congestion,
- number of available drivers,
- length of the route.
During peak hours, Bolt can cost the same or even more than a traditional taxi. Off-peak hours, however, often offer lower fares and greater convenience thanks to card payment and pre-ride pricing.
What are the advantages of Bolt?
The biggest advantage of the app is convenience.
There's no need to call a taxi or explain to the driver where you want to go. Simply enter your destination in the app, and payment can be automatically charged to your card.
Additionally, you can track the driver's arrival and receive electronic confirmation of the journey.
It's worth knowing
If you only care about the lowest price, don't assume that Bolt will always be cheaper. Before booking a ride, it's worth comparing the price in the app with that of a local taxi company – especially for longer routes or airport transfers.
Summary
If you live in Cyprus or are planning a vacation there, it's worth having the Bolt app installed. It's currently the most convenient way to order a taxi.
This doesn't mean, however, that every ride will be the cheapest. It's a good idea to check the proposed price before traveling, and remember that in Cyprus, Bolt uses licensed taxis, not private drivers as is the case in some countries.
