Getting Married Abroad and the Yellow Slip: What Do You Need to Do in Poland and Cyprus?
Wedding Abroad and the Yellow Slip This is a topic that may raise doubts among Poles living in Cyprus. If both spouses are European Union citizens and each has their own MEU1 certificate, getting married does not require re-registration.
There is also no single, shared Yellow Slip for a married couple. However, it's important to ensure the correct documentation is in place, especially if the marriage results in a name change or if the spouse's status will be used for residency, tax, inheritance, or administrative matters.
Weddings abroad and Yellow Slips. Do I need to exchange my MEU1?
No, if the only change is getting married.
The Yellow Slip, or MEU1 registration certificate, certifies the residence of an EU citizen in Cyprus. The document has no specified validity period.
If two Poles previously registered their residence independently of each other, after the wedding each of them still has their own MEU1 certificate.
No need:
- submit a joint application,
- getting a new Yellow Slip just for the sake of getting married,
- resign from the existing document,
- re-prove your residence rights just because your marital status has changed.
Is it necessary to register a marriage with the Cypriot authorities?
We did not find a general procedure requiring two foreigners living on the island to register their foreign marriage in a single Cypriot civil registry.
This doesn't mean that a marriage contracted abroad has no legal significance in Cyprus. A marriage certificate is presented to a specific institution when necessary:
- demonstrate current marital status,
- exercise the right of the spouse,
- carry out the residence procedure for a family member,
- settle an inheritance matter,
- apply for benefits or relief,
- update your details after changing your name.
There is therefore no need to "register the marriage in advance" solely because the couple lives in Cyprus.
Do I need to inform the Migration Department?
If both spouses are EU citizens, each has their own MEU1, and personal data and travel documents have not changed, there is no reason to re-apply for residence registration just because of the marriage.
A marriage certificate may become necessary later if one person exercises rights as a family member of the other.
This is particularly important when one spouse is not an EU citizen. In such cases, marriage may be the basis for obtaining residence rights as a family member of an EU citizen, and the marriage certificate becomes one of the most important documents in the procedure.
What to do after changing your name?
The situation changes if, after marriage, one of the persons takes a different surname.
First, you need to obtain new Polish documents—primarily a passport or ID card. Then, you need to ensure the data used in Cyprus matches.
The update may include, among others:
- residence permit,
- tax data,
- Social Insurance Services,
- GESSY,
- bank,
- employers,
- driving license,
- contracts for electricity, water, telephone and internet.
In the case of a residence permit, please contact the Migration Department and check the procedure for re-issuing the certificate with the current details.
A wedding concluded in Poland does not usually require an apostille.
Public documents issued in European Union countries benefit from the facilities provided for in EU Regulation 2016/1191.
In the case of documents relating to marriage, an office in another EU country should not require an apostille solely for the purpose of confirming the authenticity of the act.
The act can also be accessed multilingual standard formIts purpose is to make it easier for the office to understand the document and reduce the need for translation.
This doesn't mean, however, that a translation will never be necessary. A specific office may require additional documents, especially if the content of the document or form is insufficient to complete the procedure.
What about a wedding outside the European Union?
If the marriage took place in a non-EU country, the rules may be different.
The Cyprus office may require:
- document legalization or apostille,
- official translation,
- original marriage certificate,
- confirmation that the marriage was legally concluded,
- additional documents regarding spouses.
The requirements depend on the country where the document was issued and the purpose for which the document is to be used.
What to do with a foreign marriage certificate in Poland?
If a Polish citizen has entered into a marriage abroad, the foreign certificate can be transferred to the Polish civil registry. This procedure is called transcription.
The application can be submitted at the selected civil registry office in Poland or through a Polish consul.
Transcription is mandatory in certain situations, including when a Polish citizen has a previous Polish civil status certificate and applies for another civil status registration or applies for a Polish identity document or a PESEL number.
In practice, entering a marriage into the Polish register makes it easier to deal with many official matters later.
Poland and Cyprus use different solutions
The easiest way to remember the basic difference is:
In Poland A foreign marriage certificate can be transcribed, meaning transferred to the Polish civil registry. In some situations, transcription is mandatory.
In Cyprus Two foreigners living on the island are not generally obligated to register their foreign marriage in a single registry. The document is submitted to the institution where the marriage is to have specific legal effects.
Do spouses file taxes together?
It doesn't work like in Poland.
In Cyprus, income tax is settled individually. Spouses do not file a single joint tax return under the rules of the Polish Personal Income Tax (PIT).
However, marital status may be relevant for certain tax reliefs, benefits, and determining family income. In such cases, the Tax Department may require proof of marriage and the spouse's details.
This means that a married couple does not need to be registered just to file a joint PIT, but the act may be needed when using specific tax solutions.
What about a marriage between two women or two men?
Cyprus currently does not allow same-sex marriage under its own law. However, since 2015, same-sex marriages have been possible on the island. Civil Union, also available for same-sex couples.
In Cypriot law, a civil union has effects similar to those of a marriage, with the exception of certain issues, including those relating to adoption.
The situation is different for a couple who legally married in another country.
Cyprus must respect rights under EU law
The Court of Justice of the European Union has found that the concept of "spouse" in EU freedom of movement law is gender-neutral.
A Member State cannot refuse the right of residence to the spouse of an EU citizen solely because the marriage is between two persons of the same sex and its own law does not provide for such marriages.
In November 2025, the CJEU also ruled in Case C-713/23 that a Member State is obliged to recognise, for the purposes of EU law, a marriage between two EU citizens of the same sex, legally concluded in another Member State.
However, this does not automatically grant all the effects that arise solely from Cypriot domestic law. In inheritance, family, tax, or benefits matters, the basis for the specific entitlement must be verified.
Transcription rules have changed in Poland
From August 23, 2026 New templates for copies of marriage certificates are in force, enabling the correct transcription of foreign same-sex marriage certificates.
This change allows for the preparation of a Polish certificate without entering one of the individuals in a box that is inconsistent with their gender. The document now includes information that the certificate was prepared as a result of the transcription of a marriage concluded outside of Poland.
This does not mean that same-sex marriages will be permitted in Poland. The change applies to the registration of marriages legally concluded abroad.
You both have a Yellow Slip and are getting married – what should you do?
If two Polish citizens living in Cyprus have their own MEU1 certificates and get married abroad, the practical plan is as follows:
- Keep your original marriage certificate.
- If the wedding took place in an EU country, ask about the multilingual standard form.
- Consider transcribing the act into the Polish civil registry.
- After changing your name, exchange your Polish documents.
- Update your data with Cypriot institutions.
- Do not submit a new MEU1 application solely because of a change in marital status.
- Present a marriage certificate when a specific procedure requires proof of spouse status.
Marriage does not invalidate Yellow Slip
The most important answer is simple: if you are both EU citizens and each of you has your own MEU1, Getting married abroad does not require you to re-apply for a Yellow Slip.
However, a marriage must be properly documented in Poland and presented in Cyprus when it is to produce specific legal effects.
If personal details have changed after the wedding, the residence permit and other Cypriot records should be updated.
This material is for informational purposes only. In individual residence, tax, inheritance, and family matters, the current procedure should be confirmed with the appropriate office.
