Moving to the occupied north of Cyprus also means changing payment rules. Daily settlements there are dominated by Turkish lira (TRY), but in many places you can also pay in euros, and card payments are widely available.

For a tourist, however, the most important thing is not only that what can you pay with, but also in what currency it is best to make a transaction, how to avoid unfavorable currency conversion and what to watch out for when withdrawing money from an ATM.

The status of this area must also be clearly defined at the outset. Poland does not recognize the self-proclaimed "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" and does not maintain diplomatic relations with it. The government of the Republic of Cyprus does not exercise effective control over the northern part of the island, and the application of European Union law in these areas remains suspended.

What currency is used in occupied northern Cyprus?

In practice, the basic currency used in the north of the island is Turkish lira – TRY.

It is in lira that prices are most often displayed in supermarkets, restaurants, local shops, petrol stations and many service points.

In tourist-oriented places, however, you can often also pay euro, and sometimes also British pounds.

This does not mean, however, that paying in euros is always profitable.

If the bill is for example 1000 TRY, and the seller offers to pay a specific amount in euros, they use their own conversion rate. This may be less favorable than the current market rate.

Therefore, before paying, it is worth knowing approximately how much a given amount is in zloty or euro.

Lira or euro – what is the best way to pay?

The simplest rule is: If the price is quoted in TRY, it is best to pay in TRY.

It doesn't really matter whether you pay by card, phone, or cash. The point is to prevent the merchant or terminal operator from automatically converting the amount at their own exchange rate.

The situation is different when a hotel, a trip or another service has a fixed price from the beginning, e.g. 80 eurosThen the euro is simply the currency in which the seller has set the price.

Can you pay by card in the occupied north?

Yes. In larger cities, hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, gas stations, and many other places, card payments are common.

Visa and Mastercard are the most practical solution for tourists.

This doesn't mean, however, that the card will suffice absolutely everywhere. A small amount of cash can be useful in small shops, markets, minor services, and areas outside major tourist destinations, among other places.

Therefore, the best solution is usually: card as the primary method of payment + a small amount of lira in cash.

However, there is no need to convert your entire budget into TRY before departure.

Most importantly: on the terminal, select TRY

This is one of the most important rules when making payments in the occupied north.

If the bill is issued in lira, the terminal may offer two options, e.g.: 1200 TRY or a specific amount in PLN or EUR.

In this case, it is best to choose TRY.

The second option may involve the use of a mechanism Dynamic Currency Conversion – DCCThe terminal operator then makes the conversion at its own rate.

Revolut also recommends that when making international payments, you select the local currency and reject the currency conversion proposed by the terminal.

You should not choose PLN just because you immediately know how much will be debited from your account.

By selecting TRY, you leave the conversion to your bank or card operator instead of the terminal operator.

Does Revolut work for payments in Northern Cyprus?

You can pay with your Revolut card wherever the merchant accepts the given payment card network and the transaction will not be restricted by your bank or terminal operator.

The most important rule remains the same: if the price is in TRY, select TRY on the terminal.

Revolut uses data from multiple independent sources to set its exchange rates, but your actual exchange costs may depend on your plan, limits and terms at the time of transaction.

Therefore, before making a larger transaction, it is worth checking the current rate and rules directly in the application.

ATMs in occupied northern Cyprus

ATMs are available in cities and popular tourist destinations.

If you want to withdraw Turkish lira, the basic rule is the same as at the terminal: choose payout in TRY.

The ATM may offer to settle the withdrawal in Polish zloty or euro. In this case, the ATM operator performs its own currency conversion.

It is worth rejecting them.

You also need to be careful additional commission from the ATM ownerThis fee may be charged independently of any fees charged by your bank or Revolut. Revolut itself warns that some ATMs charge their own fees and recommends selecting local currency when withdrawing.

Information about the additional commission should appear before the withdrawal is approved.

If the fee is high, it is better to cancel the transaction and try another ATM.

Is it worth having euros with you?

Yes, especially if you are travelling north from the part of the island controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.

The euro can be a useful reserve currency.

However, this doesn't mean you should pay for everything with it. If a product costs a certain amount of lira, the seller may use their own conversion rate to euros.

For small everyday expenses, it is usually more convenient to: TRY in cash or card settled in TRY.

The euro is worth treating as an additional option.

This is especially important when shopping in the occupied north.

Don't just look at the big number displayed on the board. The most important thing is how many liras you will actually receive for a specific amount of euros.

In larger exchanges, even a small difference in exchange rate can be significant.

Also, be careful when paying in euros.

The most practical set is:
